Thinking through Textiles

Student collaborative project, Glasgow School of Art

£700 research grant awarded

Hanqi and Larissa propose a sustainable solution for ‘natural dyeing with kitchen residues - onion skins’ to promote the thinking through materials. They conducted field research to collect purple and yellow onion skins from local Scottish food waste and discarded textiles (e.g. cotton, linen, wool, etc.). By experimenting with a variety of formulations, dyeing methods (dip-dyeing, binding) they provide practical examples of future sustainable dyeing processes. They design and lead natural dyeing workshops to teach local Scottish primary school students about creative thinking and sustainable design awareness, and to promote the dissemination of sustainable development concepts through experiential workshops.
